IKEA responds to Trump immigration order

IKEA leadership has denounced U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration orders in a letter to U.S. employees.

Lars Petersson, country manager for IKEA USA, sent a letter to employees explaining Trump's decision to sign an executive order that suspends the entry of citizens from specific countries. The order temporarily suspends all immigration for citizens of seven countries — Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen — for 90 days. All countries are predominantly inhabited by Muslims.

“Our IKEA values clearly tell us that leadership is taking action and standing up for what we believe in.,” Petersson said. “That is why we are committed to continuing to stand for the dignity and rights of everyone.”

The company is working to idenitfy any employees that have been impacted by the decision, and is also providing free legal advice to through IKEA iCare benefits. Employees can also reach out to trained counselors for mental health aid.

Petersson wrote that Trump’s proposal is “so troubling” as it discriminates against a certain group of customers and co-workers, according to the letter.

IKEA's first Ohio location is based in West Chester Twp., and opened in 2008. A second store in Columbus is currently under construction, and is set to open later this year.
