Spectrum Brands’ new $33 million Dayton distribution and manufacturing center is preparing to open, and the site needs qualified workers.

“We will actually start manufacturing in January,” Ken Burns, Spectrum Brands vice president of global operations said in an interview Friday. “Some of the products that we originally made in Texas, we’re in the process of tearing those lines down as we speak.”

That production work will be moved to Dayton from Texas, he said.

The company’s manufacturing and distribution center is being opened near Dayton International Airport, off U.S. 40, for Spectrum’s Global Auto Care Division, where the business will be hiring for more than 200 positions including:

Maintenance mechanic, electrician/toolmaker, millwright/fabrication, maintenance group leader; positions in secondary packaging; jobs in distribution, positions in manufacturing and more.

The warehouse and packaging sides of the new center are also preparing to open, Burns said. Store product pallet displays will be brought in by February, with shipping to the site’s first customers in March, he said.

Spectrum Brands says it offers employees 401K, paid holidays, competitive wage, medical, dental and vision insurance and vacation.

The company’s intention is to begin interviewing candidates and making offers, Burns said. Many of the first employees will start in January, he said.

“The building is almost complete,” Burns said. “Basically, the outside, with the exception of the doors. The roof was done yesterday. The (new) road, even though it’s not open, is completed.”

He added, “And they’re working on the offices for us to take possession in the first week of January. And I see no reason why that won’t happen.”

Spectrum Brands’ products are available in more than one million stores in about 160 countries. Based in Middleton, Wisc., Spectrum Brands Holdings has some 15,500 employees in 50 countries and generated net sales of about $4.69 billion in fiscal 2015.
