UPDATE: 5 things to know about ‘airplane emergency’ in Dayton

A large emergency response was dispatched to the Dayton International Airport in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

UPDATE:

As of 11:16 a.m., Delta officials told this news outlet that the passengers departing at 11:30 would fly in an alternate aircraft to resume the flight. The flight is still scheduled to depart at 11:30 a.m.

Maintenance technicians continue to evaluate why the engine of the plane overheated, but have yet to determine a cause. Delta officials said they had not heard of the tail end of the plane dropping during flight.

Out of the 123 original passengers, about 70 of those customers boarded the alternate flight for Atlanta at 11:30 a.m.

Here are five more things you need to know about the incident, and how it might impact your flight schedule:

1. Multiple fire crews were dispatched around 6:15 a.m. after a report of an airplane emergency. Around 6:37 a.m., WHIO crews on the scene confirmed an airplane declared an emergency and landed at the airport.

2. One passenger on the Delta flight to Atlanta said he heard a loud bang just a few moments into the flight. Shawn Hemmerich, a Brookville man, said the pilot came on the intercom and told passengers the plane suffered a malfunction and they needed to make an emergency landing in Columbus. The pilot didn't say why they landed in Dayton instead. "The tail end of the plane kind of dropped down pretty suddenly," he said. "Some people started screaming."

3. A Delta Air Lines spokesperson said Flight 2392 returned to Dayton shortly after takeoff "when there was an indication the engine was getting too warm."

4. The plane, which was carrying 123 passengers, landed safely. Another airplane has been sent to Dayton International Airport. The flight is now scheduled to take off at 11:30 a.m. and arrive in Atlanta at 1:05 p.m. Delta apologized for customers' delay.

5. According to Dayton International's flight tracker, there are no other apparent delays or cancellations due to the incident.
