Archie Miller and his Dayton Flyers coaching staff pulled off another recruiting surprise Sunday with the verbal commitment of Matej Svoboda, a 6-foot-7 forward from the Czech Republic. He visited Dayton over the weekend and sat behind the bench for the game Saturday vs. Duquesne.

Svoboda, 20, fills the last of five open scholarships in the class of 2017. He averaged 19.0 points at the FIBA U-20 European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, in 2016. He was the second-leading scorer in the tournament and the top 3-point shooter, making 21 of 42.

Svoboda would be the ninth foreign player to play for the Flyers. Dayton also has Greece native Kostas Antetokounmpo on the roster this season. He will be eligible to play in 2017-18.

Dayton previously signed four players for 2017: Jordan Davis, a 6-4 guard from Irmo, S.C.; Jordan Pierce, a 7-0 center from Scotch Plains, N.J.; McKinley Wright, a 6-0 point guard from Champlin Park, Minn.; and Nahziah Carter, a 6-6 forward from Rochester, N.Y.
