Construction to start on new Fairborn Kroger in fall

Developer Oberer Realty Services has finalized a deal to build a new $20 million Kroger Marketplace store in Fairborn.

The 135,000-square-foot store is expected to open in the space currently occupied by The Shoppes at Valle Greene retail center, which will be demolished to make way for the new Kroger Marketplace.

The retail center is attached to an existing 69,000-square-foot Kroger that will remain open until the new marketplace store opens and eventually be filled with another tenant, Oberer said in a release.

Oberer is currently constructing a new 6,000-square-foot retail center on Commerce Center Drive, which will absorb some of the retail lost at the Shoppes at Valle Greene and include tenants, PetValu and Pro Nail, among others.

“Given our long-standing relationship with Kroger, we’re really excited about their commitment to expansion at Valle Greene North and their role as a key anchor retailer. We also look forward to ramping up the development to offer additional retail and restaurant opportunities,” said Oberer President Chris Conley.

Construction is expected to begin in September or October of this year, said Mike Gebhart, Fairborn’s community development director.

Currently, Kroger employs 200 people at the existing store. Between 100 and 150 new jobs will be created due to the company’s expansion, Gebhart said.
