  • Crime scene over 1/2 mile long on Salem Ave.

UPDATE @ 1:27 p.m.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was shot and killed while in a vehicle that wrecked on Salem Avenue in Trotwood overnight.

Kenneth Atwater Jr., 28, of Dayton, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

Police said at the scene that Atwater appeared to have gunshot wounds to the head and neck areas and did not suffer injuries in the crash.

The other occupant of the vehicle, a female who was also seriously injured, remains at Miami Valley Hospital. Her identity and condition have not been released.

UPDATE @6:40 a.m.

Trotwood Police Deputy Chief John Porter said the early morning shooting and crash is being investigated as a homicide.

Around 2:15 a.m. police and medics were dispatched to a reported crash caused by a shooting in the 5300 block of Salem Avenue.

Porter said two vehicles were traveling south on Salem Avenue when an unknown altercation occurred between the occupants in both vehicles. Witnesses told investigators gunshots were fired from one vehicle into the victim’s vehicle moments before the vehicle crashed.

Porter said the victim’s vehicle lost control near the intersection of Salem Avenue and Olive Road where it left the roadway, went airborne, and rolled multiple times before it came to rest on its top near the parking lot of the former Elder Beerman location.

The victim’s vehicle was found on its top with two people trapped inside.

A 28-year-old Dayton man was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe the man was killed by a gunshot wound to his head and neck area, and was not killed from injuries sustained in the crash. Porter said police will know more about the man’s death pending an autopsy by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

A 26-year-old Dayton woman was injured in the crash, but not shot, and was transported to Miami Valley Hospital in critical condition. Porter said the woman was taken directly into surgery and has not yet talked with investigators.

The shooting vehicle fled the scene before police arrived on scene. Porter said the description of the suspect vehicle is vague but officers are looking for a dark colored vehicle, either a Dodge Charger or Chrysler 300.

Police said it’s too early in the investigation to determine if shots were exchanged between the vehicle and it was not immediately known if the man or woman was driving the victim’s vehicle.

Porter said the crash scene is over a half mile long on Salem Avenue and is believed to have started in Clayton, before ending in Trotwood.

“The whole incident remains under investigation and we’ll be looking into this for quite some time,” Porter said.

Investigators are expected to remain on Salem Avenue for several hours.
