Protesters in ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ garb attend committee meeting on Ohio abortion bill

Several protesters dressed in costumes from "The Handmaid's Tale" dystopian TV series on Hulu attended a committee hearing Tuesday at the Ohio Statehouse to protest an abortion bill.

According to WBNS-TV in Columbus, the bill would ban the dilation and evacuation abortion procedure, what pro-life activists have called dismemberment abortion, using forceps and instruments to remove a fetus in pieces from the womb. It’s the most common abortion procedure in Ohio.

The Handmaid’s Tale is based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood. The novel and TV show are both set in a theocratic dictatorship, with the controversial plot of an evangelical Christian takeover of the government, and ‘handmaids” forced to conceive babies due to a society-wide fertility crisis.

The TV show features Elizabeth Moss, former “The West Wing” and “Mad Men” star.
