“We at the Sheriff’s office offer our condolences to his family,” said Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.
The last time the sheriff had spoken to Matthew Hopper was at a ceremony dedicating a portion of Interstate 70 in honor of Suzanne Hopper last fall, but Kelly said he had heard about Matthew’s illness and was saddened by the news. Kelly and other deputies attended visitation services for Hopper held Monday night at the Conroy Funeral Home.
Survivors in Matthew Hopper’s family include parents Victoria Hopper and Joseph Kleehammer, both of Springfield; his two children, Madeleine and Cole Hopper; and two step-children, Emily Bauer and Charles Waughtel. Hopper is also survived by his three siblings, Glenn Hopper, Joel Kleehammer and Joseph Kleehammer, and their spouses and children.
Matthew Hopper was a figure at many of the memorial services and dedications follow his wife’s death in 2011, including her snowy funeral and burial at Myers Cemetery in Clark County attended by hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the state.
