NOVEMBER: Kettering levy passes, school board elected
Breen was scheduled to be sworn in at Tuesday night’s school board meeting, but submitted a letter to Superintendent Scott Inskeep last Friday, according to the district’s community relations coordinator, Kari Basson.
“Due to a conflict between business responsibilities and the amount of time required to fulfill the duties as a member of the school board, I regret that I must tender my resignation as of today,” Breen’s letter said.
Reached by phone Wednesday, Breen said he is pursuing a newly available opportunity to expand his family’s out-of-state rental property business, saying that effort would require him to make repeated trips to Maine. He said more of the business is falling to him due to changes in other family members’ availability.

“When I realized that I’m going to be out of town for long stretches of time, it’s unfair to the school board to do that,” Breen said.
In the November election, Breen finished third in a race for three school board seats, narrowly edging Darren Cooper for the last spot. Breen was also a candidate in the 2012 Republican Congressional primary, earning 2 percent of the vote in a three-way race won by Mike Turner.
Basson said Breen had met twice with Inskeep since the election, going over school board responsibilities and meeting dates.

Basson said residents interested in serving on the school board should write letters of interest addressed to the school board president and sent to the Board of Education offices, 3750 Far Hills Ave., Kettering OH, 45429.
The other four members of the school board — Lori Simms Parks, Jennifer Kane, Jennifer Gilmore and Jim Ambrose — will select Breen’s replacement, who will serve through 2019. The final two years of Breen’s term will be determined by voters in the November 2019 election.
Breen was a substitute teacher in Dayton Public Schools for 25 years.
