Rodney said city officials will review the construction documents filed with the city late last week. Kroger would be able to break ground as soon as building permits are issued, he said.
Patty Leesemann, a spokeswoman for Kroger, said officials with the Cincinnati-based company are “still working through contracts and have not closed with the developer.”
Leesemann did not provide details on a projected timetable for the project of the potential number of jobs that will be created. “More details will be available once we close and sign contracts,” she said.
The store is set to be on about 15 acres between Costco and Cabela’s, facing south toward Feedwire Road.
The proposed store is slightly smaller than the Kroger Marketplace at 1095 S. Main St. in Centerville that opened in 2011.
A Cornerstone Kroger store would add yet another option to what is already a very competitive grocery-store market in Dayton’s south suburbs, which in addition to multiple Kroger locations, now includes Whole Foods, Costco, Meijer stores, three Dorothy Lane Market stores, Fresh Thyme, Sam’s Club, Dot’s Market, Earth Fare and Trader Joe’s, among others. And some retailers such as Target and Walmart have expanded their grocery selections to carve off their own slice of the grocery market.
Kroger officials have not commented on what would happen to the two current Kroger locations at 6480 Wilmington Pike and 2100 E. Whipp Rd. that are closest to the Cornerstone location. But it has submitted plans to Sugarcreek Twp. officials to build a new fuel center and make several other improvements at its Wilmington Pike location.
Kroger built a new store in the Austin Landing development in Miami Twp. in January 2013, but decided to keep open a nearby store at 725 W. Central Ave. in Springboro.
