Educator Profile: Stephanie Hinds, principal, Brookville Elementary

Educator: Stephanie Hinds

Position: Brookville Elementary Principal

Family: Husband Greg, daughter Emily is a sophomore at Brookville High School and daughter Lindsay is an eighth- grader at Brookville Intermediate School.

Where did you go to school? I am a graduate of Eaton High School, got my bachelor's degree from Ohio University, and my master's from Wright State University.

What's your career been like so far? I feel that becoming a teacher was one of my biggest career accomplishments. I was a classroom teacher for 13 years, receiving National Teaching Certification in middle school Science. Ten years ago I was given the opportunity to serve as the curriculum director for Brookville. Missing the daily interaction with students, I decided to apply for the elementary school principal position and I have served in that capacity for the past five years.

What's your favorite part of being a principal in Brookville? Interacting with students is my favorite part of my job. I strive to be a good role model for the students and allow them to see that we all make mistakes, but we must be accountable for our actions. I want all my students to know they are valued, talented and loved.

What is your favorite elementary activity? Each day we begin with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the reciting of a student pledge that affirms the students' ability to make good choices. Throughout the school year every student is invited to lead this pledge along with me.

Favorite children's author: Eric Carle

What's one of your defining characteristics? I try to visit each classroom every day. It is important that students know me and that I know them. I'm driven by seeing students learn and grow and I want to help them get a great start in school.

What is your favorite Brookville tradition? One of the best traditions we have here in the elementary school is the end of school year "Clap out ceremony" for the third graders advancing to our intermediate school. All the students in grades K-2 line the halls and clap as I lead the third graders through the school one last time. Staff and parents greet the kids when they exit the building. It's a proud and exciting moment for the kids.
