Northmont’s Academic Challenge team wins title

ENGLEWOOD – Northmont High School’s Academic Challenge team won its second tournament in the past four weeks, capturing the championship of the Little Miami Academic Challenge tournament.

The team consists of Kara Combs, Molly Buchanan, Caitlin Hoyng, Betina Dobles, and Athena Dobles.

The team was placed into the championships bracket for preliminary play, facing five other teams who had already qualified for regionals. Northmont easily won against Walnut Hills, Cincinnati Country Day, and Tippecanoe. The team then defeated two state-ranked teams in Miami Valley School and Beavercreek to win the division.

The wins placed Northmont into the Final Four tournament, where they easily defeated Piqua and Ross High School.

The team will compete at a home event on Dec. 3 before travelling to Chicago and Atlanta over the school’s winter break.

Northmont will host its annual NAQT format Academic Challenge tournament on Dec. 3 at Northmont High School. The tournament will run from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. This tournament will draw 28 of the top academic teams from the state of Ohio, as well as from neighboring Indiana and Kentucky. Anyone interested in seeing the team in action or volunteering to keep score at the tournament is welcome to attend.
