“I didn’t take this job to stop after six months,” Harris said, noting he will likely run to retain his appointment. “Hopefully I will have learned a lot more and contributed a lot more.”

Harris’ appointment comes from a pool of seven candidates, which included City Councilman Tyler Starline and mayoral candidate David Wilson.
School Board President Mark Combs said the board found Harris’ interview “beyond outstanding.”
“We’ve had to do this a few times, and it’s not easy when we have to do this,” Combs said. “We weren’t looking for a person who would say yes to everything. We were looking for someone who would honestly represent our community.”

A real estate appraiser, Harris started working as a Huber Heights City Schools substitute teacher back during the Great Recession before recently leaving the position. He is the father of two Wayne High School graduates, Rachael and Nick, who both attend college, and is husband to Robin Harris.
In February, using information provided by the school district, a Dayton Daily News report said Robin Harris had applied for the position. The district acknowledged the mistake Friday.
