No working smoke detectors in house that caught fire, killed Dayton woman

The Dayton woman who died as a result of a house fire Sunday morning in the 100 block of Eugene Avenue has been identified as Gretchen Dixon, 59, according to Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger.

“The back of the house is on fire and there is people in there,” a 911 caller told dispatchers. “There’s smoke coming out of the back door.”

Firefighters found Dixon and her pet Siberian Husky dog inside the rear door of the home.

Fire investigators said the home didn’t have working smoke detectors, which severely cut down on Dixon’s chance to safely get out of the house.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigators say a mattress was involved and may have spread the flames.
