At least one family is displaced after a vacant apartment caught fire in a complex, causing smoke damage to their adjacent apartment in Trotwood, Capt. Scott Meyers of the Trotwood Fire Department said.

Emergency crews responded to the apartment complex in the 800 block of Kildare Place Tuesday around 2:40 a.m.

Another resident of the building arrived home from work to discover the damage to his apartment that morning.

“I just got home, and when I saw the news, I knew something was wrong,” said John Danso. “I’m shocked. The roof is caving into my downstairs apartment. I don’t know what to do. The whole place is trashed. Everything’s a mess. There’s no electric.”

Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the second story apartment fire that took firefighters 20 to 30 minutes to get under control, said Meyers.

All residents were evacuated, and no injuries were reported.

Red Cross will assist those displaced, said Meyers.

Danso told News Center 7 Reporter Malik Perkins that he will stay with family or friends and is waiting until daylight to see what he can salvage.

Meyers said he was not aware if there have been complaints of squatters in the building.
