5 Girl Scouts honor Oakwood vets with sculpture

Girl Scout Troop #30149 has unveiled a bas relief sculpture honoring Oakwood veterans Saturday morning at Orchardly Park.

The memorial was designed to be child-friendly and was created by Dayton-area artist Virginia Krause Hess with the help of the Girl Scout troop, according to a release.

Troop #30149 consists of five ninth-grade girls from Oakwood High School who accomplished this task as part of their Girl Scout Silver Award.

Two years ago, the girls chose this project with the following mission statement, “We want to capture young children’s interest and want them to inquire and learn about veterans at an early age.”

The sculpture was financed by Girl Scout cookie sales, the Oakwood Rotary Foundation, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kettering Post 9927, and donations from the community, read the release.
