Longtime fire chief to retire

Sugarcreek Twp.’s fire chief plans to retire after 38 years of service.

Fire Chief Randy Pavlak submitted his letter notifying the Sugarcreek Twp. Board of Trustees of his intention to retire March 1, 2016, and it was accepted by the board at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday.

“I joined the fire department to fulfill a desire to serve the community,” Pavlak wrote in his letter. “It has been fun, exciting and the camaraderie is unparalleled.”

Pavlak joined the Sugarcreek-Bellbrook Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in March 1977. When the department separated in 1989, he became a part-time firefighter with the Sugarcreek Twp. Fire Department. He’s served as the department’s chief for the past 20 years.

“Although I love the fire service, the Sugarcreek Twp. community and all my fellow workers, it is time for me to step aside and move on to new opportunities in my life,” Pavlak wrote.

Pavlak said he had two main goals while serving as chief and those were serving the citizens with the best possible care and making sure the township sent each of the firefighters home to their families each day.

“I take pride in knowing I was able to accomplish this during my tenure,” Pavlak said.

Pavlak said he intends to confirm the retirement date following a Sept. 15 meeting with the Ohio Police and Fire Pension System.

Township officials have not released any details about a search for Pavlak’s replacement.
