"We're trying to provide for the community," Branford Brown, Miami Valley Urban League, Dayton, executive director, said Friday night.
The games, which go until midnight, are designed to serve as an deterrent to crime that tends to occur late at night and during weekends.

"Friday night is typically when people get into trouble if they don't have anything to do that is safe, fun," Brown said. "We're trying to provide recreational activity that is positive."
Games are taking place at the Greater Dayton Recreation Center, 2021 W. Third St. Teams will play for 10 weeks in the pilot program, then advance to a playoff.
The hoops league is one of several programs the League offers.
Other programs include an after-school program offered at two public schools in west Dayton, and a workforce development program focusing on out-of-school people 18 to 24 years of age.
