The market is an outgrowth of local community farmers markets that operate during the summer months. The market is organized with support of producers participating in the Miami County Food Council, which works through The OSU Extension Office in Miami County.
Among items that will be offered by Troy Night Market vendors are homemade jams, jellies, fruit butters, baked goods, gourmet roasted coffee, herbal seasonings, tea blends, honey, maple syrup, popplng corn and other items. The market also will offer a limited number of handmade kitchen/household related items such as soap, ceramic ware and rolling pins along with seasonal fresh produce, herbs, flowers and garden plants.
The first Troy Night Market will offer free samples of local foods to acquaint visitors with available products, said Karen Purke, market manager.
Plans are for the market to operate the first and third Tuesdays of each month through May 17. Several of the vendors participated in the winter Market on the Miami held at the former Tin Roof restaurant at Troy’s Treasure Island. As of last week, 19 vendors had signed on with more expected before the market opens.
“We are concentrating on ‘local foods’ and the vendors will only be bringing items that are in season here in this area. That means we will not have strawberries or grapefruit this winter because they do not grow in Ohio during the winter,” Purke said.
The market also will feature area non-profits and a Market Education Table to raise community awareness. Youth groups will feature projects on some market dates, Purke said.
The market will be held in the Rec’s first floor gymnasium that can be accessed through the Rec’s Water Street entrance on the building’s north end. The Rec is located north of the Public Square on the east side of the street.
