“The project will preserve the historic reading rooms, foyer, and entry while rebuilding and expanding the footprint,” the resolution from the Board of Library Trustees said.
The library’s new footprint would include a larger program space that can be divided into smaller spaces, according the the resolution.
The renovations and expansion, which includes updating technology, will come with a price tag. The proposal calls for a 1.8-mill rate, which means the bond issue would cost $63 per year on a property valued at $100,000, according to Sam Braun, finance manager at the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office. The amount must now be certified by the auditor’s office.
The Oakwood Board of Education would then vote to put the bond issue on the March 15 ballot. The board is expected to vote at its regular meeting on Nov. 16.
If approved, the plan calls for a single-phase renovation to be completed by 2018.
“It’s kind of a hidden gem in Oakwood. Not a lot of people really think to use it, so I think them renovating would be a really, really nice addition to the community,” said Oakwood resident and Sinclair Community College student Caroline Dixon.
Dixon said she uses the library frequently.
“I love that it’s quiet and I love that the librarians are so helpful, and I love the environment,” she said.
The plan includes more views on the east side of the building which backs up to Wright Park.
“It’s a beautiful community. The park behind the building and, you know, the trees. It sounds great,” former Oakwood resident Brian Thie said.
