Yellow Springs Police Chief Brian Carlson told the Dayton Daily News that the investigation is ongoing as the cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.

“On April 21 2020 at approximately 12:10 p.m. the Yellow Springs Police Department responded to a call regarding an unresponsive person in the north area of the Glen Helen Nature Preserve,” Carlson said in a statement.

He added that, “YSPD and the Miami Township Fire and Rescue officers were unable to resuscitate the individual. The Greene County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy. No additional information is available at this time.”

The coroner’s office confirmed that YSPD is handling the investigation and noted that the identity of the deceased was not going to be released as of Wednesday afternoon.

“The autopsy results will take a week or so before we determine the manner of death,” according to the coroner’s office. “Right now everything is pending.”

Glen Helen is a 1,000-acre nature preserve, located in Yellow Springs and it had been announced in late March that the nature preserve would be closing it trails in accordance with Gov. Mike DeWine’s stay-at-home order.

It is a private, non-governmental non profit, and does not fall under the public parks exemption.

“As such, we currently lack the staff and volunteer support necessary to protect the Glen and ensure the safety of our visitors under recent, but essential, social distancing directives,” officials operating the Glen said in a statement. “At this time, we all need to take social distancing seriously by staying home and limiting contact with others. We appreciate your understanding and continued support.”
