Retired elementary principal sworn in as Xenia mayor

Marsha Bayless leads council facing tight budget and city income tax issue.

XENIA — The city’s new mayor, Marsha Bayless, was sworn into office Jan. 14, and councilwoman Pat Felton, who is serving her 17th year on council, was named council president.

Felton told members she wanted to lead city council in “one of the most critical years in Xenia,” as the city faces a tight budget and a pending May ballot issue which would increase the city income tax by one-half percent.

“When we start talking about needing money, please listen,” she said. “Call and ask questions.”

Jeanne Mills, who was sworn in for her second term on council, was voted in as council vice president. The meeting also included the swearing-in of Wesley Smith, elected to his first term as a member of city council.

In other business, council approved appointing Michael Engle to a four-year term on the city’s Civil Service Commission. Engle, a 20-year resident of the city, served on city council from February 2006 through December 2007. He has spent 23 years as a civilian employee at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, with experience in personnel management. His term will expire in December 2014.
