Hundreds gather at vigil for Jefferson Twp. man killed in Dayton crash

UPDATE @ 9:05 p.m. (Sept. 27): An estimated 200 people gathered at the scene of Monday night's fatal accident to remember Diante Everhart, of Jefferson Twp.

A clutch of candles was left in the middle of South Gettysburg Avenue, near the intersection of Alvin Avenue where a black car smashed into a tree.

Dayton police, who offered the crowd estimate, at one point had to block traffic on South Gettysburg because of the size of the gathering.

UPDATE @ 9:15 a.m. (Sept. 26):

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal crash in Dayton Monday night as Diante Everhart, 38, of Jefferson Twp.

His cause and manner of death has not been determined.

FIRST REPORT

One person has died following an accident in Dayton on Monday night involving a vehicle that struck a tree, apparently while racing another vehicle.

The victim was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital, according to a Montgomery County Coroner's investigator. The victim’s name, age and address were not immediately available.

According to county regional dispatch, a black car flipped after smashing into a tree in the area of South Gettysburg and Alvin avenues about 7:30 p.m.

At the time of the accident, the victim was unconscious but breathing.

We're working to find out whether the victim was the driver or a passenger in that car.

A Dayton police Traffic Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to investigate the accident.

We're also working to find out whether police are looking for the other vehicle.
