Want a new cat? Adoption deals offered in response to overcrowding

An increase in the number of cats and kittens at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center has the county offering a special deal on select cats and kittens through July 31.

They can be adopted for $20, a fee that includes spay/neuter, first vaccines, cat registration and an adoption kit. The cost is $40 off the regular fee.

Cathy Petersen, county director of communications, said a burst in spring breeding brought the influx of new cats. Last summer, a similar problem led the county to offer a special price for adoptions after the center saw a 25 percent increase over the usual number of felines in the late summer.

Those available now are a variety of ages.

“Our target goal for adoption would be all of the cats and kittens, we want to see all of them adopted into homes,” said Mark Kumpf, director of the animal resources center.

The center works with a number of other shelters, such as SISCA and the Humane Society, to prevent euthanizing animals due to overcrowding when possible.

“We have not euthanized a cat for space since 2014,” Petersen said. “We try to work with other rescue shelters and adoption centers.”

The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center is located at 6790 Webster Street in Dayton and will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
