Students said they were enjoying the warm weather and company of their classmates.

“We just like to hang out and be with each other, and the feeling of community is a great feeling,” Maggie Weingarz, a UD sophomore, told News Center 7’s Caroline Reinwald.
On Friday, UD administration sent an email to students warning the campus police have seen increased instances of high risk drinking and lack of civility toward university staff and police. The email cautioned an increased staff and police presence in the neighborhoods Saturday.

“While it’s only mid-February, there’s no question that spring is in the air,” the email stated. “As the days are becoming warmer, there has been an increase in large crowds and gatherings in the student neighborhood on Saturday afternoons.”
On Saturday, temperatures hit a Miami Valley record of at least 66 degrees, while the Flyers beat St. Bonaventure in a 76-72 match.

“I feel like a lot of UD cops are coming out here for no specific reason,” said Sam Guardino, a UD junior. “We are just out here having fun. No violence, or anything like that. We’re just here having a good time.”
A culture of drinking at UD has hit headlines already in 2017. This week, underage drinking charges against 18 UD students were filed in court following a Feb. 2-3 sting at bars on Brown Street.

Another student, Andres Berdut, is free on bond following an incident this week in which three female students reported a nude man entered their houses. University officials said he is trespassed off campus. Berdut’s lawyer, John Paul Rion, told News Center 7’s Mike Campbell, “we’re conducting our own investigation into the matter and trying to determine exactly what happened.”
