Ohio Air National Guard fighter jets boomed through the skies above Springfield last night on a night training exercise, a Guard spokesman confirmed today.

The 180th Fighter Wing’s F-16 Fighting Falcons will conduct night training exercises through Thursday, said Staff Sgt. Shane Hughes, a spokesman for the Toledo-based unit.

“Our jets practice night maneuvers as part of their annual training they need to keep up on which allows them to deploy anywhere in the world,” Hughes said.

The wing is based at Toledo Air National Guard Base in Swanton, Ohio.

The fighter unit was temporarily based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in August 2013 while the runway at its home base was repaired.

The Miami Valley base also temporarily hosted the 1st Special Operations Wing last August. The unit flew CV-22 Ospreys out of Wright-Patterson on night training missions.
