The Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate recognized Central State University for its recent awards and athletics success.

Central State was named the top historically black college this year by the publication HBCU Digest. The distinction is meant to point out excellence in academics, student activities, athletics and leadership at America’s HBCUs, according to HBCU Digest.

Women’s basketball coach Shelba Harris was named the female coach of the year by HBCU Digest. Also, CSU student Juan Scott also recently became the NCAA Division II national champion in the 110 meter hurdles race, according to the university.

The state legislature applauded CSU last Wednesday with a resolution honoring the school’s achievements. Rep. Bill Dean, R-Xenia, praised the university for its recent success.

“Students come to learn at Central State from all over Ohio as well as across the nation and other countries because they see that a bright future is affordable and possible thanks to Central State,” Dean said. “I must say also when I have been to Central State, it seems like family and a family atmosphere.”

CSU president Cynthia Jackson-Hammond thanked all those who have supported the university. She also invited legislators and officials to visit the campus near Dayton.

“Come and see what we do,” Jackson-Hammond said. “We are steadfast to make sure that we are the institution that the state of Ohio can be continuously proud of.”
