Raise Your Brush Owner Laura Carter — who still operates the studio that she opened at 169 N. Main St. in Centerville in January 2013, more than two years before launching the Troy location — said she found it difficult to balance operating the two studios in communities so far apart.

“It’s not just the commute, but the difficulty in being able to be involved with the city and people of Troy,” Carter said. “I think (we) underestimated how important it is to be ingrained in the community that your business is in. We now recognize that the success we have enjoyed in Centerville has a lot to do with that.”

“Being that I can’t be in two places at once, I feel I am being spread too thin. I want to be able to focus on the Centerville location, and hope that someone who is a part of the Troy community will take the reins. We know that Raise your Brush is an asset to Troy, and we want someone to bring the location up to its full potential.”
Carter holds a degree in fine arts from the University of Dayton and taught art at Smith Middle School in Vandalia for 12 years before founding the Centerville studio.

Here’s how Carter described the venture in 2013:
“Many women go to jewelry parties or kitchen-gadget parties in the evenings, just to get out of the house and have a glass of wine with their friends,” Carter said. “We will offer a much different experience for people to get away for a few hours, and to get creative at the same time.”
