Opening Day TODAY for new Springboro tavern

Mr. Boro’s Tavern — which has been more than a year in the making at 495 N. Main St. (Ohio 741) in Springboro— opens today, March 14.

Construction and plumbing issues wreaked havoc on the tavern’s original projected timetable, so co-founders Marci Johannes and co-founder Rick Baarlaer are eager to unveil the new gathering spot.

Today is our Grand Opening day!!! We're super excited!! Long day ahead but pumped and ready to go. 🤗 Our staff is amazing!! We are so lucky to have all of them representing Mr Boro's. See you all soon!!

“We’re extremely excited about opening our doors to the Springboro and surrounding communities.” Johannes told this news outlet last month. “Our goal was to create a warm, rustic, open and inviting atmosphere. It’s pretty cool to see our vision finally come together to provide a new and different hangout for people to enjoy.”

Johannes said she and Barrlaer have received substantial community support along the way. “It’s a great feeling to have the community behind us, and that makes all the long hours and hard work seem worth it as we prepare to open to the public.”

The 3,000-square-foot tavern will seat 99 inside and another 30 on its patio, Johannes said.

The pub will focus on local breweries’ selections and signature cocktails, and its menu will include pizzas, specialty grilled-cheese sandwiches, chili, appetizers and salads, Johannes said.

“We have seven different gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, and customers can create their own,” she said.

Specialty cocktails include the Blueberry Cheesecake Martini, made with blueberry preserves; The Black Gold, named for the only horse to win the Ohio Derby and the Kentucky Derby; and The Tallulah, which Johannes described as a “take-me-out-to-the-ballgame kind of drink,” made of Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey, Coca-cola, and peanut puree.

The space on Ohio 741 had housed a wine bar/pub/wine shop for more than 15 years. A wine bar called Mulligan’s Wine & Stuff opened there in 1998. The wine bar went through ownership and name changes, becoming Grapes of Ruth and ultimately Bella Vino, before the latter shut down in June 2015.

The pub had a couple of invitation-only and soft-opening events prior to today’s opening to the public. Mr. Boro’s Tavern’s initial hours will be 2 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. seven days a week. Plans call for adding lunch service in a few weeks, offering daily lunch specials from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
