Chaminade Julienne earns first state baseball berth in 42 years

Eagles beat DeSales in regional final

The Chaminade Julienne baseball team beat Columbus DeSales 4-3 in a Division II regional final Saturday at Mason High School to earn the program’s first state semifinal berth in 42 years.

The Eagles played in the state tournament in 1964, won the state tournament in 1970 and returned to state in 1975.

CJ ended the drought thanks in part to three RBIs by Garrett Wissman. He hit a two-run home run in the first and doubled in a run in the sixth.

That last run proved important because DeSales scored one run in the seventh and had the tying run on base when Ryan Peltier, who pitched a complete game, got a flyball out to end the game.

CJ will play Athens or Steubenville at 4 p.m. Thursday in the state semifinals at Huntington Park in Columbus.
