UD students to broadcast basketball games in Mandarin Chinese

The University of Dayton men’s basketball team may gain new fans in China this season.

Five UD students from China will broadcast home men’s basketball games on DaytonFlyers.com in Mandarin Chinese this season. Anyone in China can listen to the broadcasts, starting with the exhibition game against Saginaw Valley State on Nov. 7, for free online.

“This is an exceptional opportunity to promote the Dayton Flyers brand internationally and provide our students with unique real-world experience,” said Assistant Athletic Director Michael LaPlaca in a press release. “The combination of basketball’s popularity in China and the opportunity for international students to become more involved with Flyer athletics sets the University of Dayton apart from any other institution.”

The students are Gu Hang, Yiqing Zhou, Ruixu Liu, Xueyin Shi, Xinsi Chen and Bin Zhou. They will announce the games on a rotating basis.

Dayton has 636 students from China. It’s the largest international population on campus. The university has partnerships with 10 Chinese University and also has a permanent presence in China with the the University of Dayton China Institute in the Suzhou Industrial Park.
