Dayton Flyers close to top 25 in first AP poll

The Dayton Flyers sit right on the edge of the top 25 in the first Associated Press poll of the 2016-17 season. It was released Monday.

The Flyers received 98 points in voting, which leaves them one spot behind Cincinnati and two spots behind No. 25 Maryland. No. 23 Rhode Island is the only Atlantic 10 teams in the top 25.

Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Villanova, Oregon, North Carolina, Xavier, Virginia, Wisconsin and Arizona make up the top 10.

UCLA, who Dayton could play in the second round of the Wooden Legacy tournament, ranks 16th. Ohio State and Ohio also received votes in the poll.

St. Mary’s, Dayton’s third opponent Nov. 19, ranks 17th.

Dayton ranked as high as No. 15 in the AP poll last February. The Flyers play an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Friday against Findlay and open the season a week later at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 against Austin Peay.

Dayton scrimmaged Marquette on Saturday in Indianapolis. No stats were released, but Marquette released a video on Twitter on Sunday night and showed Dayton trailed 34-29 at halftime and lost 83-79.
