Indiana introduces Archie Miller as head coach

Former Dayton Flyers coach says he’s honored to coach Hoosiers

Archie Miller has never liked press conferences, but he doesn’t let that stop him from delivering great performances at them. One reporter covering his introductory press conference Monday at Indiana’s Assembly Hall said he won over the whole state.

Two days after his six-year run as coach of the Dayton Flyers ended with a sad goodbye to his players at UD, Miller began a new chapter as head coach of the Hoosiers. His new players entered the arena just before Miller and his wife Morgan and daughter Leah walked in with Athletic Director Fred Glass.

Glass said, “Welcome to Indiana basketball, Archie,” and soon gave the microphone to his new coach.

“I’m honored and excited to represent Indiana University,” Miller said, “in what we consider one of the finest traditions in all of college basketball.”

After addressing a couple hundred fans in attendance, Miller answered questions from reporters. He was asked how hard it was to say goodbye to his players Saturday and what kind of team he thinks he left behind for the next Dayton coach.

“It was very hard,” Miller said. “As these guys know, I’m with them in many cases more than I am with her (his wife Morgan). You bring them in, and you’re working with them for years. You’ve seen some of their ultimate lows. You see the death of a player, Steve McElvene, from Fort Wayne, Ind. You see the hurt in them all. You see their best moments, which is winning conference championships. A lot of them have reached out to me since the meeting, and I don’t think the meeting was a lot of fun, but I’m very proud of their response. I think all those guys will feel better about themselves. They’re winners. Whoever the next coach is at Dayton, I think he’s getting off to a great start, and it starts with the administration.”
