UMass coach Matt McCall told the Daily Hampshire Gazette the suspensions were for "failing to live up to team standards,” and were not related to any legal problems. UMass will have six scholarship players available, including their two leading scorers, Luwane Pipkins (17.9 points per game) and Carl Pierre (10.2).

The Minutemen (7-8, 0-2) were one of two teams to lose their first A-10 games. Dayton (7-7, 1-1) was one of 10 teams to split the first two games.
