Wright State’s Welch named Horizon League preseason player of year

Wright State guard Chelsea Welch was named the Horizon League preseason player of the year today in a vote of coaches, media and sports information directors.

The senior from Fairmont High School averaged 18.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists last season. The last Raider to earn the league’s top preseason honor was Kim Demmings in 2014-15.

Teammate Lexie Smith was named to the preseason all-league second team, while Wright State was picked to finish second in the conference, getting four of 25 first place votes. League favorite Green Bay picked up the other 21 votes.

The Wright State men were pegged to finished fifth in the conference and didn’t have any players named to the first of second all-league teams.

Oakland was picked to win the league, while Northern Kentucky’s Drew McDonald was named the preseason player of the year.
