Ursid meteor shower coming tonight

Besides looking forward to Christmas, there are a few sky events to look forward to this week.

A meteor shower will be peaking December 21 and 22. The Ursid meteor shower originates from the Little Dipper or Ursa Minor.

If you bundle up and head out anytime from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday through dawn Thursday, look up to the north/northeastern sky.

Keep in mind the waning crescent moon will be rising around 1:48 a.m. which will brighten the night sky and may make it harder to find anything.

Typically there are around five to 10 meteors per hour.

The moon though won’t be a total nuisance. It will actually guide you to a bright a beautiful planet Jupiter.

On Thursday, around dawn, it will be just below the moon. On Friday it will be to the top right of the moon.
