The man who died was identified Friday afternoon as 60-year-old Alonzo Nesby Jr. by Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harsbharger. He died Thursday night at Miami Valley Hospital.
Authorities did not explain what led to the deadly shooting. However, 911 calls placed at the scene indicate there were multiple agents present from the Ohio Investigative Unit of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
“We’ve got a shooting,” a man who identified himself as an agent of the Ohio Investigative Unit told a 911 dispatcher. “A male pulled a gun on another and shot him and we’ve got a shooting. We’ve got one guy down.”
The agent said his officers were unmarked and plainclothes, which he asked the dispatcher to relay to responding Huber Height police officers.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations was requested by Huber Heights police to investigate the deadly shooting that involved the Ohio Investigative Unit, said Steve Irwin, spokesman for the state Attorney General’s Office. BCI is a part of the AG’s office.
No officers were injured, and BCI’s crime scene and special investigations units responded, Irwin said. He declined to provide further information, citing the ongoing investigation. Huber Heights police said they are assisting the investigation.
The identity of the agent(s) involved in the shooting have not been released.
The Ohio Investigative Unit is made up of plainclothes officers responsible for enforcing the state’s alcohol, tobacco and food stamp fraud laws. The OSHP on Friday did not immediately identify the agents involved nor say whether they had been placed on leave. The highway patrol also did not say why the agents were at the gas station and referred questions about the investigation to the BCI.
A 911 caller said that two men were in an argument, and that one had been shot in the parking lot. As police arrived on scene, the caller said a second man was shot as well, according to a release from Huber Heights police.
Both men were taken to area hospitals, police said. The second man, Nesby, later died of his injuries.
The Marathon was open Friday. Its owner was not available for comment.
Huber Heights Mayor Jeff Gore posted on Facebook Thursday night that there was no other threat to the community.
“I know people are making posts about what they saw and all the police surrounding the building,” the mayor said. “Again, I just want to reiterate that as it relates to this incident there is no threat to anyone else in our city.”
