And two new games, “Ultimate NES Remix” for Nintendo 3DS and “NES Remix Pack” for the Wii U, promise to take you on a jaunt through the wonderful world of Nintendo past (“NES” is short for the original Nintendo Entertainment System).
Both games are, in essence, a series of challenges from classic games like “Super Mario Brothers,” “Legend of Zelda” and “Metroid.” You’re dropped into the middle of a game and given a task – like finishing a level within the allotted time, or collecting coins, or defeating a boss. They’re little bite-sized chunks of retro games without all the head-bashing difficulty that was the hallmark of old-school games.
And there are also special “Remix” levels, which are mashups of old characters and games to create new challenges.
The games were reportedly the pet project of Nintendo’s Koichi Hayashida, who told the gaming website IGN that he designed the game partly because he wanted to play NES games at work.
The layout of the game into small challenges also feels like a nod to the quick-play design of today’s mobile hits like “Angry Birds.” The games are definitely made to be played in increments of a few minutes, or even seconds.
Of course, the real joy of the “NES Remix” games are rediscovering the games of your childhood (well, if you’re of a certain age). It’s been forever since I knocked out King Hippo in “Punch-Out!!” or found a secret staircase in “Legend of Zelda.”
“NES Remix Pack” and “Ultimate NES Remix” lets you get those thrills without having to invest hours and hours to get there. After all, we’re not 13 anymore, but these games help you relive those glory days for a few fun hours.
