Winter storm brings closures, delays, highest snow totals in years
One of the most significant winter storms to strike the area in the past decade rolled through southwest Ohio on Sunday and Monday
• Snowfall: Snow total reports on the National Weather Service website included 10 inches in Centerville and 9 inches in Kettering, Bellbrook and Springboro. Beavercreek and Miamisburg each saw reports of 8.5 inches, while many areas of southern Clark County were around 6 inches.
• Closures: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base closed to non-mission-essential personnel Monday. That led a wide range of closures that included virtually all school districts and colleges in the region.
• Snow emergencies: Almost all area counties moved to Level 2 snow emergencies on Monday. That level meant that only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be on the roads. Those emergencies were later downgraded.
• Warming centers: The Dayton recreation centers will serve as warming centers for those who need to get out of the cold during freezing temperatures this week.
• Trash pickup: Rumpke Waste & Recycling Services closed on Monday but residents are encouraged to leave material at the curb and crews will attempt to service as soon as possible.
• Here all week: The standing snow is likely to stay for awhile, as the National Weather Service predicts daily high temperatures in the region will not get above 30 degrees until possibly Sunday.
