Vintage Dayton: March 21, 2025

Dayton police officer William “Steve” Whalen was shot during a traffic stop as the suspect opened fire with an AR-15 rifle from the rear window of a truck.

He was fatally shot on March 22, 1991, at the age of 38, after serving 15 years on the police force.

The Dayton VA Medical Center was one of three original VA hospitals in the U.S. You can learn more from its historical marker.

• UD’s Chaminade Hall was built in 1904. The building will be torn down after the school’s spring graduation.

• The village of Bowersville was taken over by bank robbers on this date in 1933. The gang was never identified.

• Local basketball legend Charlie Coles had the greatest single scoring season in area high school basketball history. He averaged 42.1 points per game in 1958-59.
