Better Business Bureau issues eBay scam warning

The Better Business Bureau of Dayton/Miami Valley issued a warning Wednesday advising businesses and consumers to be wary of phony eBay notices.

Officials said people are receiving bogus email notices allegedly from eBay claiming they were the winning buyers of eBay items, but the seller has informed eBay that payment for the item hasn’t been received, or the recipient couldn’t come to an agreement with the seller. As a result, the recipient could be suspended from eBay.

The message says the recipient can appeal, but when the recipient clicks on the item number on the notice and logs in, the scam artist captures their eBay account information, officials said.

Better Business Bureau officials said eBay won’t ask users to provide confidential information by email.

To report a “phishing” email to eBay, forward the fake notice to spoof@ebay.com. If a link in the email takes you to a fake website, report the email and URL to phishing-report@us.cert.gov.
