CareSource, Humana win Kentucky Medicaid contract

CareSource landed its first win out-of-state in its partnership with Humana, securing a contract to provide Medicaid managed care in Kentucky, the health plan said Thursday.

The Humana contract is for a 16-county region, including Louisville. Approximately 170,000 eligible Medicaid recipients live in the selected area, according to CareSource.

Under the agreement between the nonprofit CareSource and the commercial insurer Humana, CareSource is in charge of administering the Medicaid program. Humana’s expertise is Medicare.

Dayton-based CareSource, and Louisville, Ky.-based Humana announced their partnership in March. CareSource received a new Medicaid contract in Ohio in April, and is the state’s largest Medicaid provider. CareSource, in partnership with Humana, also received one of Ohio’s first dual eligible contracts to serve people eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid in August.

“As our partnership with Humana grows, we are excited about how our two organizations will work together to manage medical coverage for individuals who need it most,” said Pamela Morris, CareSource president and chief executive officer, in a statement.
