Dayton-area employers loom large among state’s top 100

With 3,500 employees, integrated steel manufacturer AK Steel Corp., based in Butler County’s West Chester Twp., is ranked at No. 90. The company, of course, has a steel plant in Middletown, also in Butler County.

Cintas, based in Mason, has 3,600 employees. It is ranked at 86 on the list.

Oxford’s Miami University, with more than 4,200 employees, is ranked at 75.

Crown Equipment, headquartered in New Bremen, has 4,800 workers and is ranked at 68.

Kettering Health Network, with 12,000 employees, is put at No. 21. Dayton’s Premier Health Partners, with 14,000 employees, is ranked at 16.

No surprise here: The largest Dayton-area employer is Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, with an employee count that the state puts at 28,000. It is ranked at No. 6.

But in one particular way, the base comes in first, the state noted.

“Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (6) near Dayton employs 28,000 workers,” the state said in its summary. “Approximately two-thirds of this total are civilian workers. At 8,145 acres, the air base is considered the largest employer at a single site in the state.”

With more than 50,000 employees, the Cleveland Clinic tops the list altogether. Walmart stores is ranked second, with 49,330 state employees.

With 15,000 employees, Honda ranks as the top manufacturing company in the state, according to the department. General Electric is second, with 12,000 Ohio employees.
