The new owner operated the bakery from 2004 until 2011, but closed the business about 18 months ago, Evans said. There had been a bakery on the premises since 1927, he said.
Bill Evans’ daughter Jennifer said she and partner, Matthew Tepper, have lived in Michigan for 15 years, pursuing other careers — Evans in civil engineering and Tepper as an assistant city manager of a Detroit suburb.
“We grew tired of what we were doing, and we wanted to do something different. We wanted to work for ourselves,” Evans said. After talking it over with her parents, Evans and Tepper decided to move to Dayton — they now live in the neighborhood that is home to the bakery — and to restore the bakery that she watched her parents operate when she was growing up.
“This neighborhood just needed someone to come back and reopen this bakery,” Jennifer Evans said.
Evans Bakery is a full-service bakery, offering doughnuts, cakes, pies, bread, pastries and other items, Jennifer Evans said. “We want to serve the neighborhood and the whole city,” including commuters between Huber Heights and downtown Dayton who drive past the bakery on weekdays, she said.
Evans said the bakery will employ four, including her partner and her mom and dad — although Bill Evans said he and his wife “are more like unpaid consultants, I think.”
Evans Bakery’s hours are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and may expand after the first of the year, Jennifer Evans said.
