The hospital stated in an announcement about the changes that while a parent might normally go to the emergency department for a broken bone, this will be a lower cost and convenient option.
A parent’s first stop may be the emergency department if they suspect their teen or child has a broken bone but Dayton Children’s after-hours ortho will save them time and money. At the south campus in Springboro, orthopedic specialists will be available evenings and weekends to diagnose and then cast, splint or brace the injury, as needed.
This will mean less costs for patients because it will be billed as an outpatient visit instead of an emergency room visit with a higher co-pay. Also at an emergency department, a patient would need a follow up visit to a doctor, where with the after hours care they are treated in one place.
The hours are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday.

A spokeswoman with Dayton Children’s said they will be using existing staff and space for the after-hours care.
Dayton Children's also added open scheduling for parents and referring doctor's offices to make appointments online during the day.
The hospital has opened other convenience care options recently including an Kids Express clinic in Springboro similar to a retail clinic in a grocery store, which treats minor conditions. The hospital also opened a new urgent care center in Huber Heights in December.
