Defense contractor to consolidate local employees in new building

Defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. will consolidate most of its Dayton-area workforce into a new Beavercreek building, its local corporate executive said Tuesday.

About 400 Northrop Grumman employees will move into a 100,000-square-foot building at 4065 Col. Glenn Highway, and the company will close offices in Kettering and Fairborn, said Jay Jabour, the company’s Dayton corporate lead executive.

About 75 employees will remain at 4020 Executive Drive in Beavercreek, he said.

Offices at 2555 University Blvd. and 2850 Presidential Drive in Fairborn will close, as well as manufacturing space at 1900 Founders Drive in Kettering, Jabour said. The company has about 50 manufacturing employees, making avionics equipment.

The $16.7 million project was developed by Mills Development Cos. and built by Synergy Building Systems. Mills is the developer behind Pentagon Park, the Acropolis, the new Indu and Raj Soin Medical Center, among many other local projects, many of those in Beavercreek. Northrop Grumman will lease its space, Jabour said.

Jabour said consolidation has already started, with the final group of employees moving in about three weeks.

Having most workers in one place makes sense, Jabour said. The new building will be closer to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s Area B, and employees will share a common infrastructure and IT support. The base is a key focus of the Falls Church, Va.-based company’s local workforce.

“There’s a lot of synergy to be gained by us all working together,” he said.

Jerad Barnett, president and chief executive of Mills Development, said defense contractors rely on Mills partly because of the company’s land holdings close to the base and partly because Mills knows how to build SCIFs — sensitive compartmented information facilities, or secure facilities that help defense contractors protect sensitive information.

Security is a significant concern for defense firms, and Mills has built more than 30 SCIFs in this market, Barnett said.

“Defense contractors are a little different than your average tenant,” Barnett said.
