Piqua company goes out of business after 100 years

The Piqua-based Orr Felt Co., which manufactures paper, has closed its doors after more than a century in business.

The decision came after employees held a meeting Thursday, Melody Weaver, president of Workers Union Local 199, which represented the employees, said Friday.

Company officials declined to comment.

When it closed, Orr Felt had 27 employees, down from more than 200 employees in its heyday.

The employees who lost their jobs as a result of the closure will receive severance packages, Weaver said, noting the State of Ohio has agreed to help retrain them and find jobs for them.

The company was forced to go out of business because more people are using digital documents instead of the traditional paper, and China sells its paper cheap, Weaver said.

Orr Felt dates back to the mid-1800s, and during WWII it made more than a quarter million blankets and sleeping bags for the armed forces.
