Family Dollar plans to build new store in Kettering

Kettering store will be 4th new location in area since beginning of year.

KETTERING — Family Dollar is planning to build a new store at 2360 S. Smithville Road near Wilmington Pike in a location that formerly housed an Elder-Beerman store, company officials and Kettering city officials said Friday.

Family Dollar is scheduled to open the 8,230-square-foot store in the spring of 2013, according to Josh Braverman, communications director for the fast-growing North Carolina-based discount retailer with about 7,100 stores. Plans for the new store is on the agenda of the Kettering City Planning Commission on Monday, said Kettering Economic Development Manager Gregg Gorsuch, who called the store “a welcome addition” to the former Elder-Beerman site, which has been vacant since the former department store was torn down in 2006. It will be located adjacent to an existing O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store on the former Elder-Beerman site.

“Anytime you can turn a vacant department store into two lots and two businesses, that’s a win-win ,” Gorsuch said.

Family Dollar stores typically employ eight to 10 people, Braverman said.

The new store will be about a mile away from an existing Family Dollar store in the Breitenstrater Square Shopping Center at Wilmington Pike and Patterson Road in Dayton, but Braverman said he is not aware of any plans to close or consolidate any stores .

Family Dollar opened a new store June 14 in Huber Heights, July 5 in Wilmington and earlier this year at 1028 N. Gettysburg Ave. in Dayton earlier this year.
