Fifth Street Brewpub to build addition

Fifth Street Brewpub, the cooperatively owned brewery and tavern at 1600 E. Fifth St. in Dayton, has submitted plans to build an addition that would expand its kitchen facilities and menu offerings and would create a performance area on the brewpub’s patio.

The addition calls for the installation of a ventilation hood that would allow the brewpub to cook burgers and other dishes. The brewpub’s current menu is limited to panini-style sandwiches and items that do not require grilling.

Brian Young, president of Fifth Street Co-op, said the project will cost an estimated $50,000 to $60,000, depending on the bids received. If all goes well, the kitchen facilities could be completed as early as May, Young said.

“We’ve had a good launch here — better than expected, actually — and customers want a bigger menu,” Young said.

The expansion plans are on the agenda at Thursday’s Dayton Landmark Commission meeting.

The Fifth Street Brewpub opened in 2013 and starting brewing its own beers in 2014, and it also serves other craft brews. Although member-owned, it is open to the public.
