Gas prices in the Dayton area are 8.5 cents cheaper today than this time last week, a decline expected to continue as fall approaches.

At an average $2.63 per gallon, Dayton-area gas prices are 23.9 cents lower than one year ago. The lowest price at a Dayton station was $2.39 this morning.

Nationally, this is the sixth straight week gas prices have declined.

“After last week’s escalation in the trade battle between the U.S. and China, it’s possible that the streak continues longer than previously anticipated as oil markets react to the news, sending oil lower,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

Labor Day travelers this weekend are expected to see the cheapest end-of-summer prices since 2016, DeHaan said.

“Gas prices will likely decline even more substantially starting in mid-September as most of the nation begins the transition back to cheaper winter gasoline starting September 16. Fall will bring plenty of falling gas prices, so long as there remains turmoil between the U.S. and China,” he said.
